Overcome Your Self-Doubt

We all have dreams, we all have that one idealistic dream lifestyle we’d love to be living.

But, what’s stopping us?

These dreams of ours, they’re dreams for a reason. If they were easy to get, they probably wouldn’t be dreams.

This is why I’m not questioning why everyone isn’t currently living the exact life they want, but I am questioning why they aren't striving towards it.

Although getting there isn’t easy, I don’t think this is enough.

I believe the lack of trying stems from a deep-rooted societal lack of belief.

If everyone believed they could get what they wanted, everyone would try.

It’s the self-doubt that stops people from ever bothering to find out if they’re capable of achieving their dreams, and there is something deeply sad about that.

And if that is the case, if your self-doubt is stopping you from getting what you want, wouldn’t you like to change it?

Wouldn’t you want nothing less than to rid yourself of the one thing stopping you from chasing your dreams?

Why Are We Like This?

Before we delve into changing our self-doubts, let’s explore why they exist.

The first thing to note is our environment. We are not born with self-doubt, in fact, it’s the complete opposite.

When we were toddlers, we put capes on and believed we would become superheroes, we had boundless imagination and self-belief. However, somewhere along the way, it faded into a distant memory.

I believe this is a direct result of our social environment. Through the way the school system operates, and the advice and words of our elders, the self-belief we once had got shaken out of us.

I also believe that we have ourselves to blame, through failed attempts and giving in to ease and comfort, we have cultivated enough evidence to believe we may not have what it takes to succeed.

It’s the combination of both that has led us to be the type of people who go to the grave with unmet potential.

Okay, enough of the doom and gloom, let’s change it.

Overcoming The Doubt

As we have been influenced by the people around us, it’s now our responsibility to mitigate the impact they’ve had. We can’t change the past, but we can control who we surround ourselves with and who we listen to moving forward.

Questioning the beliefs and ways of the people around you will open your mind to new ideas, you should then do whatever is necessary to listen and learn from the people who will help you create new beliefs.

If you’re wondering who to listen to, just find whoever has what it is you’re looking to get, whether their in person or online.

The more stories you listen to, the more you’ll question your current beliefs. Soon, you’ll not only question them but feel a certain anger towards them, as you’ll realise what they’ve done to you until now.

Unfortunately, this won’t be enough, to get rid of your self-doubts, you must also gather new personal evidence that you are capable of doing whatever it is you want to do.

For this, you must take action. You have to overcome your self-doubt by proving yourself wrong. And the only way to do this is to exit your comfort zone.

You have to put yourself in situations where you can directly challenge the stories you’ve been telling yourself.

If you say ‘I could never be a runner’, go run.

If you say ‘I’m not a morning person’, go start waking up earlier.

It’s as simple as that. Simple, not easy.

This is no walk in the park, it’s a very difficult thing to do, but it must be done if you want to rid yourself of the very thing holding you back.

Once you’ve conquered enough things you convinced yourself you couldn’t do, you leave yourself wondering what else is possible.

The more you do, the more the self-doubt shrinks.

Keep raising the bar until you see the achievement of your dreams a matter of when, not a matter of if.
